As the football program at Izard County High School goes through one transition, another was recently announced as new leadership has been selected. The Izard County School Board has hired Henderson State running backs coach and director of football operations JR Tolleson as the Cougars’ new head coach.

Tolleson tells KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot Sports he and his fiance were excited when they got the news.

In Tolleson’s lone season with the Reddies, they had three of the top 15 running backs in the Great American Conference along with the league’s top passing offense. Prior to Henderson State, he coached the defensive backs at his high school alma mater, Magnet Cove, under the leadership of Caleb Carmikle, who is currently the head coach at Heber Springs. During his time with the Panthers, they won a conference championship at the high school and junior high levels.

Tolleson went to Brockwell on Friday to meet with his new high school and junior high players and had the opportunity to watch them work out. He says he sees Izard County as a similar place Magnet Cove.

Tolleson will take over an Izard County program getting ready for its inaugural season of traditional 11-man football. He says he is looking forward to the challenge of leading the Cougars through their transition from the eight-man form of the game.

Tolleson says he’ll be going back and forth between Brockwell and Arkadelphia as he gets ready to finish his time at Henderson State. When the spring football sessions begin, he plans to be at Izard County everyday.

Tolleson will succeed Jared Johnson, who is leaving the Cougars to become the new principal at Viola High School.
