Mountain Home residents interested in serving on the City Council will have a one-week window to file for their candidacy.

Beginning July 31, the filing period will begin for candidates interested in running for one of the eight seats on the council. The deadline to file will be noon on August 8. Interested candidates will need to have their completed paperwork with the Baxter County Clerk’s office during the open timeframe.

To be eligible to serve on the council, a resident must be a U.S. citizen and Arkansas resident, at least 18 years of age, registered to vote, and living within the city limits of Mountain Home. In addition, eligible candidates must never have been convicted of fraud, embezzlement of public money, bribery, forgery, or other infamous crimes.

The City of Mountain Home is divided into four wards, each with two representatives. Candidates must choose to run for one of the two positions in the ward in which they reside.

Mountain Home municipal races are nonpartisan, and candidates are placed on the ballot by signature petition. First, they must collect signatures from 30 active voters within the city limits. The petitions are then presented to the County Clerk’s office, which verifies the signatures before placing the candidate on the ballot. Candidates submitting their signature petition will also complete a political practices pledge and an affidavit of eligibility.

Elections for council seats will be held during the general election on November 5. All council seats are elected “at large,” meaning all municipal races will appear on the ballots of all city residents, regardless of which ward the voter lives in.

Councilmembers serve a two-year term that begins on January 1, 2025, and ends on December 31, 2026.

For additional information on running for municipal office or to pick up blank petition forms, visit the City Clerk’s office in City Hall or the County Clerk’s office in the Baxter County Courthouse.
