Nick Caito / ESPN Images(LAUSANNE, Switzerland) — Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt is down one Olympic gold medal after one of his teammates was found to have used a prohibited substance in the 2008 Beijing Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Wednesday that a re-analysis of Nesta Carter’s samples from Beijing “resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance methylhexaneamine.” As a result, the 31-year-old and the remainder of the Jamaican men’s 4×100-meter relay team has been disqualified.
“The corresponding medals, medallist pins and diplomas are withdrawn and shall be returned,” the IOC explained.
This means that Bolt now has eight Olympic gold medals instead of nine, and he can no longer claim the “triple-triple” achievement — gold medals in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4×100-meter relay at three straight Olympic Games — he clinched last year.
