Genesis PublicationsLast August marked the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles‘ classic album Revolver, and in conjunction with the milestone, the band’s longtime friend Klaus Voormann created a graphic novel that told the story of how he designed the record’s memorable cover art. Now, a deluxe limited-edition version of the book, called Revolver 50: Birth of an Icon, will be released on March 2.
The updated version of the book has been dubbed the “Grammy Anniversary Edition” because its publication date will come 50 years to the day after Voormann won a Grammy Award in the Best Cover — Graphic Arts category for his work on Revolver.
Only 500 copies of Revolver 50: Grammy Anniversary Edition will be available. Each copy of the book will be packaged with an original piece of artwork by Voormann, and will be signed by the artist. A special commemorative 12-page booklet also will be included.
“I opened my graphical ‘treasure box’ and made 500 original drawings available for the Grammy Anniversary Edition of my book,” explains Klaus.
In Revolver 50: Birth of an Icon, Voormann uses his own drawings to help tell the story of how he came to design the mind-bending black-and-white collage that appears on the cover. He also recounts how he forged a friendship with The Beatles during their early days performing in Hamburg, Germany, and how, a few years later, he was invited by the band to London’s Abbey Road Studios to hear Revolver.
The book also includes new photos, and features a foreword written by Paul McCartney and an introduction penned by Ringo Starr, along with contributions from ex-Manfred Mann singer Mike D’Abo.
