
A Cotter man, 18-year-old Osborn Eugene Gavel, was arrested Monday in connection with a theft at Buzzard Roost Marina. He was booked into the Baxter County Jail on charges of felony breaking or entering and theft of property with bond set at $5,000.
According to the arrest affidavit, Gavel's arrest comes from several tips afte images from a video of the incident were posted on Facebook. The video showed two men allegedly climbing over a locked gate at the marina, with one of the men reaching into an uncovered boat. A second suspect identified in the video, 33-year-old David Smith of Flippin, has not been charged.
Baxter County Sheriff's Investigator Sergeant Brad Hurst says the owner of Buzzard Roost Marina notified the Sheriff's Office of the thefts and two suspicious men at the marina on February 22nd. After reviewing surveillance video, he observed two men in and around their vehicle from 9:10 in the evening until around 9:47. They then walked up the ramp to the dock and began fishing. After a few minutes the pair allegedly climbed over the locked gate leading to the dock. A clip from the video shows one of the men walking down a narrow beam, between two boats, and reach into an uncovered boat. The owner of the boat reported two fishing rods, with a value of $79, missing. Another customer from the marina reported a kayak missing with a value of $250.
Images of Gavel and Smith were taken from the video and posted on the Baxter County Sheriff's Facebook page. A number of tips came in, leading to the arrest.
Gavel was located on March 6th and asked to go to the Sheriff's office for an interview. He allegedly admitted to being with Smith at the Buzzard Roost Marina, climbing the fence and taking the kayak, rods and reels along with two beers from a cooler on the dock.
