Corps of Engineers says area lakes clearing

Bull Shoals Lake and Lake Norfork’s traditional blue color is returning as water levels even out. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deputy Operations Manager Mark Case says the water is slowly receding and becoming less stained.

Case says by normal standards the water is still a little stained, but nothing like it was just two months ago, when the water was brown and floating islands of debris were all over.

Case says there hasn’t been any reports of increases in bacteria in the lakes.

According to Case there are high levels of nutrients in the water, which are ideal for algae growth, however there has not been an excessive amount of algae. It can be recognized by it’s green color
and the Corps has not recognized anything out of the ordinary.

Testing for bacteria is usually done at all of the swim beaches.

Case says when the beaches are under water, sampling occurs at other places on the lakes.
