Baker Lake at McCabe Park in Mountain Home got a makeover Wednesday and Thursday with the use of a floating excavator. The work comes as preparations are underway for the Second Annual Fishing Derby on September 30.Mountain Home Parks and Recreation Director Billy D. Austin says the ponds in McCabe Park are spring fed. The excavation work was necessary to deepen Baker Lake and address issues that come with shallow water levels.

Austin says the city is fortunate to have had the time and the equipment for the excavation donated.
He says the pond was stocked with catfish for last year’s fishing derby by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Preparation for this year’s fishing derby for children, sponsored by the Mountain Home Parks and Recreation Department, includes a second stocking.

Bakers Lake is open to public fishing as well, with Arkansas Game and Fish laws applying.
Austin says fishing is only the beginning of activities planned for the park donated in 2015 to the City of Mountain Home.
