Benton County Comptroller Brenda Guenther says the county budgeted $1.4 million for the work. The county was also awarded a $500,000 grant from the Transportation Alternatives Program, a federal-aid program to construct sidewalks and trails for non-motorized modes of transportation.
Officials at nonprofit Preserve Arkansas say historic preservation helps the state and individual communities retain tangible reminders of their history and culture.
A county judge says the work on the bridge should keep it functional and historically significant.
