A Boone County man, accused of holding a woman and two children hostage in October, will undergo a criminal responsibility exam to determine if he is fit for trial. Twenty-five-year-old Evan Villines of Harrison is charged with three felony counts of first-degree domestic battery and misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with emergency communication. Court records indicate Villines’ public defender has filed a notice of intent to rely on the defense of mental disease or defect.
According to the Hometown Daily News, Newton County Sheriff Keith Slape says his deputies responded to a residence in Compton. Villines was reported to be threatening the woman calling authorities, a three-year-old child and a baby. The caller told police Villines fired a gun in her direction. She said she was able to flee the residence, but the two children were still inside. When deputies arrived, they reportedly observed Villines running toward the house brandishing a gun. Authorities say Villines was apprehended before getting inside the residence. Sheriff Slape says the children were discoved shortly afterward unharmed.
Villines’ next court appearance is scheduled for April 4th.
