Students in Cotter gathered Wednesday to hear from youth advocates with the Cotter School district about the dangers of tobacco by decorating laundry items with tobacco control messages and facts. A city official was on hand to read a proclamation, signed by Mayor Peggy Hammock, about tobacco.Kick Butts Day is a nationwide event and officially took place during spring break. The time is set aside for youth to encourage their peers to be tobacco-free, reject tobacco companies’ marketing and urge elected officials to help make the next generation tobacco free.
This year, Kick Butts Day focused attention on the progress the United States has made in reducing youth smoking and the actions needed to create the first tobacco-free generation. According to the event’s officials, since 2000, the national smoking rate among high school students has fallen by 71 percent.
