Doobie Brothers team up with musicians from around the world for new version of “Listen to the Music”

Courtesy of Playing for ChangeA new version of The Doobie Brothers‘ “Listen to the Music” that features core band members Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee, along with dozens of other musicians from around the world, serves as the title track of an upcoming compilation from the Playing for Change organization.

Listen to the Music, which is the fourth installment in Playing for Change’s Songs from Around the World album series, will be released April 20 on CD and as a digital download. The record is available for pre-order now.

You can watch an official video for the new rendition of “Listen to the Music” now at Playing for Change’s YouTube channel. The clip features footage of Johnston singing and playing guitar in the Redwood Forest in Northern California, and Simmons and McFee performing at a seaside park in San Diego. Other musicians are captured singing and playing instruments outdoors in locations including Los Angeles, Mississippi, Venezuela, India, Congo, Brazil, Lebanon, Japan, Argentina, Senegal and South Africa.

The song and video also include performances from ex-Tower Power singer/keyboardist Ellis Hall and Johnston’s daughter, Lara.

The Listen to the Music album features 12 tracks, all recorded live outdoors in various countries using a mobile recording studio. Among the songs on the record are renditions of The Grateful Dead‘s “Ripple” featuring David Crosby, Jimmy Buffett and Los LobosDavid Hidalgo; Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” featuring ex-Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes. Dr. John, Buddy Guy and Tom Morello also appear on various tracks.

The concept behind Playing for Change’s Songs from Around the World series is to bring together artists from various countries to promote global unity through music.
