John Lennon self-portrait as Hitler sells to collector for $54K

Mark and Colleen Hayward/Getty ImagesA self-portrait of John Lennon as Adolf Hitler has sold for $54,000. This according to Page Six, which reports that the “crude sketch” was done by the future Beatle while he attended the Liverpool College of Art in the late 1950s.

The doodle features Lennon at a podium with his hand raised in a Nazi salute with the words “Heil John” repeated several times, as if it were coming from the crowd below.

“The fact that he even thought of depicting himself as Hitler is weird,” said Gary Zimet, who arranged the sale for the memorabilia company Moments In Time.

Also weird is another item on Moments In Time’s website: the John Lennon/Yoko Ono Double Fantasy album that Lennon signed for Mark David Chapman, just five hours before Chapman shot and killed the former Beatle.
