Jasper Postmaster Mike Black says the new Parthenon Post Office, located on the former Parthenon post office site, is nearing its completion and expects the facility should be operational later this month. According to the Newton County Times, Black also indicted a grand opening will be announced.
The original Parthenon Post Office was blown away by a tornado in March of 2017. Since then, customers have had to pick up their mail at the nearby Jasper Post Office.
A National Weather Service survey team determined the storm that hit Parthenon was an EF2 tornado having a maximum wind speed of 120 miles per hour.
In addition to the post office, other neighboring buildings were damaged, including the First Baptist Church, the Parthenon Full Gospel Church, an old commercial building at the center of the town and a nearby barn. The community building also received some damage. No serious injuries where reported.
