The Donald W. Reynolds Library Serving Baxter County invites the public to fight censorship during Banned Books Week from Sunday through Saturday. Banned Books Week offers an opportunity for readers to celebrate free expression and intellectual freedom.
Those wishing to help keep books available in libraries and promote the freedom to read can do so by exercising one’s reading rights by checking out a banned book or visiting one of the library’s banned book displays.
One can also participate in the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedoms Virtual Read-out by filming one’s self reading from a favorite banned book. The videos will be featured on the Banned Books Week YouTube channel, which can be found online at www.youtube.com.
The American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles lists of challenged books as reported in the media and submitted by librarians and teachers across the country. The top 10 challenged books of 2017 included:
1. “Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher
2. “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie
3. “Drama” by Raina Telgemeier
4. “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini
