SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP)   Officials with the Springfield Art Museum are proposing a multimillion-dollar renovation they say would make the museum a world-class attraction.

Museum director Nick Nelson presented the proposal to the Springfield City Council on Tuesday. He says the plans would transform the museum to a multi-story structure that would become a community hub with walking and biking trails and a meandering stream.

The Springfield News-Leader reports Nelson said the project would cost about $17 million, if it’s completed all at once. The museum board is considering having the construction done in three phases that would increase the cost to about $20 million.

He says after the renovation, the museum will continue to offer free admission.

Nelson said a construction timeline depends on when funding is available.
