Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson was joined by other state officials Thursday at the state capitol in Little Rock to present grants totaling more than $4.4 million to 65 Arkansas communities and counties. The grants are administered by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, and 14 grants are spread throughout the Twin Lakes Area.
The largest local grants went to the cities of Mammoth Spring and Marshall at $200,000 under the General Assistance set-aside of the Arkansas Community and Economic Development Program. The funds originate from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Community Development Block Grant State Program for Small Cities.
Baxter County was awarded $4,000 through the County Fair Building Grant Program. The program is available to fair associations in counties with a population less than 55,000, and communities must provide half of the cost of the project as a match to qualify.
Eight local grants were awarded through the Rural Community Grant Program to fund projects including community parks, walking trails, a community center, fire stations, fire trucks and other fire protection-related equipment. Cotter, the Clarkridge Fire Department, the Oakland Fire Department, the Peel Volunteer Fire Department, the Timbo Fire Department and the Omaha Rural Fire Department are all recipients of $15,000 grants, Leslie was awarded $13,995.50, and Horseshoe Bend was granted $2,984.
Three local towns were awarded grants under the Rural Services Block Grant Program to fund new construction or renovation of community centers, fire stations or multi-purpose buildings and the purchase of fire trucks. Summit was given the maximum of $75,000, South Lead Hill was awarded $60,668, and Oxford will receive $46,766.
