Tibrina Hobson/Getty ImagesIf you go to see the new movie A Private War — about the late war correspondent Marie Colvin — you may be surprised to hear Annie Lennox singing a new original song over the end credits. That’s because the Eurythmics frontwoman hadn’t written a new song in eight years before her contribution to the film’s soundtrack.
When the movie’s director asked Lennox to compose an end-credits song, she tells Entertainment Weekly, “I didn’t really feel I could write anymore, and then suddenly I felt, ‘You know, I’d like to give it a try.'”
The song, called “Requiem for A Private War,” is out now.
Before Colvin was killed in 2012, Lennox actually got to meet her, at one of the events for the singer’s advocacy organization, The Circle.
Annie tells EW, “Normally I’m really, really critical of my performances or my recordings. I don’t want to be in any way sentimental about any of this, but if Marie were here, I feel that she would feel that this was worthy of her.”
The last time Lennox did an end-credits movie song — “Into the West” for 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King — she won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar.
While Annie and her Eurythmics partner Dave Stewart have just been nominated for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the singer says fans shouldn’t expect more music from her.
“I haven’t made any plans to write any other songs,” she tells EW. “It’s a strange one.”
The Scottish singer says that instead of writing songs, she’ll continue to work via The Circle to support women and girls around the world who don’t have enough rights or resources — a cause she calls “global feminism.”
