David Crosby currently is touring the U.S. in support of his new collaborative album, Hear If You Listen, and the folk-rock legend soon will celebrate the release of new documentary focusing on his eventful career and life.
The 77-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer tells ABC Radio that the film is “a dangerously honest documentary” that viewers will “either really like…or really not like.”
As previously reported, the movie is being directed by acclaimed rock journalist and award-winning filmmaker Cameron Crowe. Crosby tells ABC Radio that he’s known Crowe since he was a teenager, when the budding journalist joined him on the road as a Rolling Stone writer.
“He knows me really well, and he’s a very good interviewer,” Crosby says. “He’s a very, very smart guy, and he asked me really difficult questions and I answered them as honestly as I humanly possibly could.”
David maintains that the flick is different from usual rock documentaries, “where you invite everybody who’s famous that you ever met in your life to say how wonderful you are, and then you can use their names in the advertising.”
He adds, “[T]hat’s not what we’re doing. We went deep, and hopefully people will see that.”
Crosby also points out that not too many of his well-known musical associates appear in the movie, although one exception is his former Byrds band mate Roger McGuinn.
As for when people might be able to see the as-yet-untitled flick, David says, “We’ll probably take it to [the] Sundance [Film Festival, which kicks off in January] to sell it, and then, after that, it’ll come out.”
Crosby’s tour with his Hear If You Listen collaborators Michael League, Becca Stevens and Michelle Willis runs through a December 8 concert in Port Chester, New York.
