NetflixAn official trailer for the upcoming Netflix special Springsteen on Broadway, which documents a performance of Bruce Springsteen‘s popular Storytellers-style stage production, has premiered on the streaming service’s YouTube channel.
The clip offers glimpses of The Boss onstage at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City as he shares confessional anecdotes about his life and his songs, and performs stripped-down acoustic renditions of some of his tunes.
Early in the video, Springsteen is shown playing “Growing Up” as he discusses how his father influenced his songwriting.
“When I was a young man and looking for a voice to tell my stories, I chose my father’s voice,” he says. “My father was my hero, and my greatest foe.”
Bruce then talks about his relationship with his mother, declaring, “Mom was a different story all together. Kindness, optimism, civility. She made me understand for the first time how good it feels to feel pride in somebody that you love.”
The clip also features Springsteen introducing his wife, E Street Band backing singer Patti Scialfa, who joins Bruce for a rendition of “Tougher than the Rest.”
“She’s a great songwriter, she’s one of the loveliest voices I’ve ever heard,” gushes the rock legend. “She is smart, tough, but fragile.”
As the trailer nears its end, we hear Springsteen sing his classic “Born to Run,” and explains what he hoped to achieve through his songs.
“I wanted to know my story, your story, wherever we’re going together as a people,” he says. “More than anything else, I wanted to be able to tell that story well to you.
Springsteen on Broadway premieres Sunday, December 16, one day after the stage show ends its Broadway run. In addition, a soundtrack album to the special will be released on Friday, December 14.
