The Mountain Home High School boys’ basketball team suffered its second double overtime loss in three days as they wrapped up the Citizens Bank and Trust Tournament at Van Buren. The Bombers fell short of a consolation title as they lost to the host Pointers 52-51.
It took a while for the scoring to get going for both teams as the first quarter ended with Mountain Home up 4-3. Van Buren had built an eight-point lead after the third period, but the Bombers came back and tied the game up at 43. Mountain Home had one last possession to try to win the game in regulation, but the Pointers were able to knock the ball out of Talyn Benton’s hands, and the buzzer soon sounded. The game was again knotted up at 47 in the final seconds of the extra period as the Pointers had the possession, but this time, Mountain Home was able to knock the ball away and force a second overtime. The Bombers once again tied the game at 51 on a pair of free throws from Luke Kruse, but Mountain Home’s Mat Jones was whistled for a foul on Van Buren’s ensuing possession. The Pointers sank one of two free throws, and the Bombers’ last shot at the buzzer wouldn’t go.
Jones led Mountain Home with 18 points, Wyatt Gilbert scored 12, and Kruse added ten. The Bombers fall to 2-2 on the season as they finish the tournament in sixth place.
Mountain Home will return to tournament play on Thursday as they meet Pulaski Academy in the Cabot Pre-Holiday Classic.
