Harrison emergency personnel have been searching Lake Harrison for a male and female in a vehichle washed off a low-water crossing late Friday night in a reported flash flood. According to the Harrison Daily Times, the search was suspended Saturday evening and was scheduled to resume at daylight Sunday.
Officials are reporting the vehicle was swept away in high water in a low spot on Highland Street south of Capps Road before 10:00 Friday evening as a strong thunderstorm rolled through the area. The maroon SUV was carried in fast-moving water down a drainage ditch until it was wedged under a small bridge near West Ridge Avenue. As of Saturday morning, debris was covering West Ridge Avenue, and the roadway was closed.
Personnel searched the tunnel running from West Stephenson into Lake Harrison, but the victims were not located. Harrison Mayor Dan Sherrell says the city was bringing in heavy equipment to remove debris. In addition, Yell County officials were contacted to bring in Sonar underwater search equipment.
Mayor Sherrell says the drain gates on Lake Harrison are expected to be open Sunday morning to continue the search. As of Saturday evening, the victims’ names had not been released.
