Paul Morigi/Getty ImagesWe’ll have to wait until the end of this month to watch it on TV, but Sunday night in Washington, D.C., Cher was presented with the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor, along with country legend Reba McEntire, composer Phillip Glass, jazz icon Wayne Shorter and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
As Billboard reports, Cher’s tribute was delivered by Whoopi Goldberg, while Cyndi Lauper, Adam Lambert and country group Little Big Town all took the stage to perform some of the diva’s hits. According to Billboard, when Cyndi came onstage to perform “If I Could Turn Back Time,” Cher yelled from the balcony, “I thought you said you were gonna be in Los Angeles!” Cyndi replied, “I lied.”
Cyndi and Adam also duetted on “I Got You Babe,” while Adam sang “Believe,” earning a standing ovation from Cher. Little Big Town did a medley of “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “I Found Someone,” and “Baby Don’t Go.”
Cher told Billboard, “I never thought I was the right person to win this award, because I’m just a little bit out there. I’m the girl who rode the cannon [on the aircraft carrier].”
Gloria Estefan, who was honored at the event last year, hosted the gala. Kelly Clarkson also performed, as part of a tribute to country legend Reba McEntire. Kelly’s is married to Reba’s stepson, Brandon Blackstock, and she thanked Reba for “being a rad grandma to our kids.”
The Kennedy Center Honors will air December 26 on CBS.
