LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas’ Republican governor says he doesn’t think
the state needs to require every school have an armed presence on campus and districts should be able to use state facilities funding for security upgrades.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Monday accepted 30 recommendations issued by a
commission he formed earlier this year to look at improving security in Arkansas
schools. Hutchinson formed the Arkansas School Safety Commission in response to
the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 students and
staff members dead.
The panel concluded no campus should be without an armed presence during class or major extracurricular activities. Hutchinson says the decision should be up to districts, and noted that the majority of Arkansas’ 235 districts already use trained school resource officers.
