RANKINIt’s not quite as impactful as when KISS first appeared without their makeup, but it’s just as significant.  Culture Club’s Boy George reveals a makeup-free face for the first time the group’s new video for the song “Life.”

As George sings the gospel-inflected song, we see him wearing his usual variety of makeup looks, big hats and colorful clothing.  But then, a little more than halfway through the song, we suddenly see George without any makeup at all, and no hat, either, with tears running down his face.

So what does he look like? A typical 57-year old white guy with interesting facial hair and some tattoos, including a peace symbol, visible along the right side of his hairline.  After about 30 seconds, the makeup and hats come back.

George has described the video as a tribute to the fans who’ve stood by him during the highs and lows of his career.

In a statement, George says of the song, “John Lennon said ‘Life’ is what happens while you are busy doing other things, but sometimes you have to stop and look with sadness and pride at what you have done and created in your own life and value the rich complexity of it!”

“As the lyricist of ‘Life’ I wanted to express something truthful, honest and bare while carrying an uplifting message of hope,” adds Boy.  “It’s my story but it’s a story so many people will resonate with.”

He continues: “A story of recovery, transformation and the start of a brand-new journey which has already brought Culture Club well-deserved accolades. It’s a song about second chances and new beginnings, enlightenment, spiritual growth and personal redemption.”

“Life” is the title track of Culture Club’s 2018 album, their first studio release since 1999.
