FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) – Leaders in Fort Smith have approved a special election
so voters can consider a temporary tax increase that would pay for the
completion of the $50 million U.S. Marshals Museum.

The Fort Smith Board of Directors voted 6-1 on Tuesday to call an election for
March 12th, 2019. If approved, the 1 percent sales tax would be in effect from
July 1st, 2019, to March 31st, 2020, and generate an estimated $17 million for the
museum, which is currently under construction.

The Southwest Times Record reports the bulk of the money would go toward finishing the internal design of the museum and for exhibits.

The Marshals Museum has raised money from donors, but foundation President Jim
Dunn has said more funding is needed to finish the project.
