While the federal government is going through another partial shutdown due to the lapse of appropriations, national parks will remain accessible as possible. According to Buffalo National River Superintendent Mark Foust, the river, park roads, overlooks, trails and open-air exhibits will remain accessible to visitors, but emergency and rescue services will be limited.
Visitor services provided by the National Park Service at the Buffalo River including public information, restrooms with water, trash collection, facilities and road maintenance are unavailable during the shutdown. Some lodging, restaurants, shuttles and vessel rentals may be available when provided by concessioners or other authorized entities. Visitors are advised to contact individual companies for hours of operation and current services.
In addition, National Park Service social media and websites will not be monitored or updated during the shutdown. All park programs, including ranger-led programs and presentations, have been cancelled.
The National Park Service is also not providing services for the campgrounds it operates, but visitors will not be asked to leave unless safety concerns require action. Visitors with campground reservations are being advised there’s no guarantee their campsite will be ready and available if they arrive during the shutdown.
For emergencies, hazardous conditions or damage to park resources, contact the dispatch center toll-free at 1-888-692-1162.
