Local basketball teams have mixed results Thursday

Two local high school boys’ basketball teams came away with victories Thursday in the Cabool Holiday Tournament. Gainesville routed Summersville 61-22 in the consolation quarterfinals. Dora later defeated Plato 73-61 in the quarterfinals.

The girls’ teams from the same two schools competed in the consolation quarterfinals of the Mountain Grove Holiday Tournament. Gainesville was eliminated by Van Buren 53-46. Dora stayed alive in the tournament by defeating Summersville 50-36.

Three area teams competed in the NEA Invitational Basketball Tournament on Thursday.
Salem’s boys fell to Ridgefield Christian 75-49 in the Division I semifinals at Jonesboro. Bryson Love was the Greyhounds’ top scorer with 18 points.
Mammoth Spring will be the Warriors’ opponent in the title game after they beat Cross County 42-34. Alex Mero paced the Bears with 22 points, and Jacob Golden had 11. Mammoth Spring improves to 12-8 on the season.
Izard County’s girls fell short of the Division II consolation title after losing to Tuckerman 40-27 at Brookland. The Lady Cougars drop to 13-7 on the season.

Calico Rock had mixed results in the Greers Ferry Lake Classic at Shirley. The Pirates eliminated Midland 64-57 on the boys’ side. Calico Rock’s girls were bounced by Quitman 63-34.

For the second consecutive day, Izard County’s boys put the mercy rule in effect in the Bad Boy Mowers Ronnie Brogdon Classic at Highland. The Cougars pounded Pulaski Academy 85-55 in the quarterfinals. Izard County was led by Coby Everett with 24 points, and Justus Cooper and Caleb Faulkner added 22 each. The Cougars improve to 20-2 on the year.
Melbourne was able to advance in the consolation bracket. The Bearkatz beat up on Highland’s junior varsity squad 72-35.
