LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) The Arkansas Senate has voted to name the Bowie knife
the state’s official knife.
The Senate on Tuesday approved by a 34-0 vote a proposal that would name the
Bowie the official state knife of Arkansas. The measure now heads to the House
for a vote.
The bill by Republican Sen. Trent Garner says the Bowie knife has played an
important role in the state’s history and that it was known as early as 1835 as
the “Arkansas Toothpick.” The measure refers to the Bowie knife as Arkansas’
most famous weapon.
Garner has also sponsored another bill that names the shotgun as the official
state firearm of Arkansas.
