An officer from the Stone County Sheriff’s Office responding to a domestic situation Tuesday found himself in a headlock and a struggle that reportedly knocked him out of his shoes.

According to the probable cause affidavit, law enforcement received a call just before 9 a.m. advising of an active domestic on Herpel Road near Mountain View involving a female holding a small baby and a larger man pushing her into the house.

When the officer arrived, he heard yelling inside the residence between a male and a female. The man answering the officer’s knock, later identified as 30-year-old John Kristopher Kuykendall, told the officer nothing was going on and attempted to slam the door on the officer in the doorway.

The officer observed an infant in a bouncy seat in the living room floor, stopped the door from being shut and instructed Kuykendall to hold on a minute.

The Stone County man reportedly told the officer to get out of his house. The officer attempted to place Kuykendall under arrest, when the Stone County man grabbed his shirt. The two went to the floor, with Kuykendall placing the officer in a headlock, from which he was able to escape. Their struggle was reportedly so intense the officer was knocked out of his shoes.

The officer managed to throw Kuykendall off him as a sheriff’s investigator entered the residence. After a brief struggle, the two were able to take Kuykendall into custody.

The victim told law enforcement she was unable to remember being pushed with her baby but said Kuykendall could have.

Kuykendall is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault by his actions with the officer. He is also facing misdemeanor counts of second-degree assault on a family or household member by creating a “substantial risk of serious physical injury to the infant child while shoving the mother” and resisting arrest.

His bond was set at $20,000, and he is to have no contact with the victim, her child or her family.
