Carlos Santana is among the music artists featured in Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, a new documentary about the legendary and innovative jazz trumpeter and composer, which will get premiere theatrical screenings on August 23 in New York City and August 30 in Los Angeles.
Santana makes a brief appearance in an official trailer for the film, which you can check out now at Eagle Rock’s official YouTube channel. In the video, Carlos, who considers Davis one of his musical heroes, describes how people react when hearing Miles’ trumpet playing.
“‘[H]e starts playing and people are like, ‘Ohhhh,” says Santana. “He just disarms you.”
The trailer also includes archival footage of Davis, who died in 1991 at age 65, hanging out with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool also features archival interviews with Miles, as well as new commentary from Quincy Jones, Clive Davis and many musicians who collaborated with or were influenced by Miles.
At one point in the promo, Quincy notes that Miles “wanted to be an artist just like [Russian composer and conductor Igor] Stravinsky.”
“Miles was a man apart — in life, in love, in music,” says Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool director Stanley Nelson, “and there has never been a major documentary about this man who never looked back, rarely apologized, and changed everything we thought we knew about jazz, about music — several times in his career… In unpacking the mythology that surrounds him — using his own words — I think we’ll be presenting the definitive, nuanced account of Miles Davis, the man behind the legend.”
