Ozark County commissioners will meet in their regular weekly session Monday to consider enacting a health ordinance regarding CAFOs or concentrated animal feeding operations in Ozark County. The Ozark County Times reports the proposed ordinance comes as a response to the passing of Missouri Senate Bill 391. The act bars counties from passing regulations that are stricter than or contrary to state-level CAFO regulations. After discussing the issue at the Monday meeting, commissioners are expected to vote on the ordinance the following Monday, Aug. 26.

Weekly meetings begin at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the Ozark County courthouse.

Opponents of the law argue statewide standards for CAFOs are not sufficient to prevent water and air pollution or loss of property value in the surrounding area. There is also concern these large operations, some of which are owned by foreign corporations, hurt independent family farms.
