Courtesy of BET NetworksBroadway is gearing up for some major Soul in the next few years.

On Monday, the creative team was announced for a Broadway-bound Soul Train musical. The team will be led by three respected women in theater: Ain’t Too Proud‘s Dominique Morisseau is writing the show, the Apollo Theater’s Kamilah Forbes will direct it, and 2019 Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown is the choreographer.

They’ll be joined by Grammy Award-winner and author of Soul Train: The Music, Dance and Style of a Generation, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots.  He will serve as an executive producer alongside late Soul Train creator Don Cornelius‘ son Tony Cornelius, Emmy-nominated CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker, and Live Nation Urban president Shawn Gee, among others.

The new musical, set to premiere in 2021, will feature more than 20 hit songs from the era and tell the personal story of Cornelius and his journey to create the era-defining hit television series.

Soul Train, a music variety series that launched in 1971, was created and hosted by Don Cornelius to help showcase both established and up-and-coming black musicians. Its final episode aired in 2006, making it, at the time, the longest-running first-run, nationally syndicated program in television history.
