One of Missouri’s oldest festivals kicked off Thursday evening in Gainesville. The 59th-annual Hootin an Hollarin will continue through Saturday at the Ozark County Courthouse square.
Music will entertain visitors each day of the festival. Square dance music will be provided by Ashley Hull Forrest, Kim Lansford, David Scrivner and Nathan McAlister all three nights starting at 9.
Contests during the festival include bed and outhouse races, calling and pie contests, quilt and pet shows, a 5k run/walk, a shotgun- and archery-shooting competition, horseshoe pitching and more.
The schedule of events includes an old-fashioned brush arbor, gospel singing on the main stage and in the gazebo and old-time games and races for children.
Hootin an Hollarin visitors may shop at a multitude of craft vendors around the square and watch demonstrations of old-time crafts.
Food choices include lemonade, kettle corn, ice cream, burgers, hotdogs, beans and cornbread, funnel cakes and barbecue.
Other highlights include the costume parade Friday afternoon at 2, with all ages competing for best old-time “Life in the Ozarks” dress. The big float and band parade is Saturday afternoon at 2.
Admission to the festival is free. For full details on the schedule, go online to hootinanhollarin.com.
