The Gainesville school district will have a new superintendent effective July 1, 2020, following a board decision this week.
The Ozark County Times reports the Gainesville R-V Board of Education has named current high school principal Justin Gilmore as the district’s new superintendent.
Gilmore is in his third year as high school principal and will succeed Dr. Jeff Hyatt, who is in his third year as superintendent. At the board’s meeting in July, Hyatt announced he would retire June 30, 2020.
Hyatt told the Times while he is stepping down from the superintendent’s job, he plans to continue teaching driver’s education classes in Gainesville, perhaps organizing a program including students from other schools in the county. The classes are traditionally held in May and June, and Hyatt says he plans to teach driver’s ed at least through June 2021.
Gilmore grew up in Clever and graduated from Clever High School in 2003. He holds a business administration degree from College of the Ozarks, a master’s degree in education from Evangel University in Springfield and a specialist in education degree from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Before becoming Gainesville principal, he taught business technology classes at Ava High School for nine years.
Gilmore’s wife, Chelsey, teaches business classes at GHS. The couple has two children, Parker, a second grader, and Ellie, in pre-kindergarten. Gilmore’s mother-in-law is Missouri 155th District Rep. Karla Eslinger of Wasola, a longtime educator.
Hyatt said the board interviewed two candidates for the superintendent’s job, and it will be considering a replacement for Gilmore in the principal’s role at its November meeting.
