Eagle Rock EntertainmentA newly restored version of the 1991 INXS concert film Live Baby Live will be shown in select North American theaters today.
The movie features the famous Australian rockers headlining a sold-out Wembley Stadium in London during their world tour supporting the hit 1990 album X.
INXS sax player/guitarist Kirk Pengilly tells ABC Audio that watching the revamped flick, which will be shown in the widescreen 4K Ultra HD format and feature a new high-res audio mix, was a unique experience for him and his band mates.
“The new 4K version and…the Dolby Atmos mix…[has] given us the opportunity actually to see ourselves live,” he explains. “We never got to see INXS live. So it’s pretty special for us.”
Lead guitarist Tim Farriss recalls being proud that INXS got to headline Wembley Stadium, after the band had opened twice for Queen at the venue twice five years earlier.
“I remember…thinking to myself [in 1986], ‘Gee, one day I hope we come back and headline here,” he tells ABC Audio. “And then, lo and behold, there we were. And we knew it was sold out a couple of weeks [before] the show.”
Farriss says among his favorite highlights from the concert were performances of the X tracks “The Stairs” and “Lately,” the latter of which had been cut from the original Live Baby Live video. Tim says he also enjoyed Kirk’s sax solo during the band’s rendition of their 1988 hit “Never Tear Us Apart.”
The film also serves as a testament to how commanding a performer and singer late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence was.
“Michael was a remarkably consistent singer,” Farris notes. “And that night at Wembley Stadium was a really good snapshot.”
