An inmate in the North Central Unit of the Arkansas Department of Correction (DOC) serving a sentence from drug charges on the outside is now facing new similar offenses on the inside.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed last week, 41-year-old Daniel Lewis of Texarkana has been charged with felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and furnishing, possessing or using prohibited articles, as well as being a habitual offender.

The charges follow a report from the Arkansas State Police (ASP) Crime Laboratory in late December reportedly confirming a substance found in Lewis’ possession as methamphetamine.

The substance was allegedly found during a search of Lewis’ personal property being stored in the laundry room at the DOC facility last July. The substance was located in a grease container wrapped in cellophane.

Due to the discovery, Lewis was placed in the restrictive housing unit and an ASP investigation requested.

Lewis allegedly told the investigating officer he returned to the North Central Unit for the second time in July 2019. He said another inmate gave him the “dope” because he was holding it for a third inmate. He said the inmate who gave him the illegal substance left the unit at Calico Rock. Afterwards, he says he reportedly “snorted the dope” by himself.

He said the illegal drug was found because “someone” told correctional officers he had the substance.
