Insight EditionsAn upcoming photo book called Tribute: Cocker Power celebrates the late Joe Cocker‘s famous 1970 Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour, as well as a star-studded 2015 Lockn’ Festival performance led by the Tedeschi Trucks Band that paid homage to Cocker and the trek.
The book, which features pics taken by rock photographer Linda Wolf at both events, is scheduled for an April 28 release. The volume includes contributions from a variety of musicians who took part in the tour and/or the Lockn’ tribute, including the late Leon Russell, keyboardist Chris Stainton, singers Rita Coolidge and Claudia Lennear, the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, and Trucks’ fellow Allman Brothers Band alum Warren Haynes.
Describing the Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour, Wolf writes that it was a “two-month traveling hippie circus that left hotel managers tearing their hair out, concert promoters screaming about a dog on stage, girls dancing naked on the rooftops of a New York city hotel, and forty-three people…traveling together on a private jet that had COCKER POWER painted on its side.”
As documented on the 1970 Mad Dogs & Englishmen album, the tour featured Cocker performing his well-known, soulful versions of Dave Mason‘s “Feelin’ Alright,” The Beatles‘ “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window,” Bob Dylan‘s “Girl from the North Country,” The Box Tops‘ “The Letter” and Russell’s “Delta Lady.”
The Lockn’ tribute, which was held in September 2015, featured performances by Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour alums Russell, Coolidge and Lennear, as well as by Mason, The Black Crowes‘ Chris Robinson, Haynes and more.
Cocker died of lung cancer in December 2014 at the age of 70.
