Courtesy of Dennis DeYoungEarlier this week, ex-Styx singer Dennis DeYoung released two songs from his upcoming solo album, 26 East, Vol. 1, as an advanced single, and now you can listen to the tunes — “To the Good Old Days” and “East of Midnight” — on the Frontiers Music label’s YouTube channel.
As previously reported, “To the Good Old Days” is a duet with Julian Lennon, and features some influence of The Beatles.
Dennis says of the tune, “It was written specifically for Jules and I to sing together. He nailed the vocal and I harmonized. Harmony baby, I love it. It’s the final song on my album and it’s a simple farewell from me as I recall the sweetest days of my past with my fans, friends, family and forgiveness.”
As for “East of Midnight,” DeYoung describes it as a song about “how late night radio changed our lives as the music transported us to a world bigger than the one we knew.” Musically, the tune, which is the lead track on 26 East, Vol. 1, echoes the classic Styx sound of the late 1970s.
Dennis’ son Matthew plays drums on both tracks, while Ides of March/ex-Survivor member Jim Peterik, who co-wrote several songs on the album, contributes guitar, bass, keyboard and backing vocals to “To the Good Old Days.”
Both songs are available for purchase now digitally and via streaming services. 26 East, Vol. 1 will be released on April 10, and can be pre-ordered now.
Meanwhile, a number of upcoming concerts DeYoung had scheduled in March have been postponed or canceled, according to various sources. An April 3 album and playback event at the House of Blues Chicago that also will feature a performance and Q&A with DeYoung and Peterik appears to still be happening.
