A Texas inmate who refused extradition has been returned to Arkansas under a governor’s warrant to stand trial on a negligent homicide charge in connection with a motorcycle accident in 2014.

Last September, Searcy County Sheriff Kenny Cassell reported 49-year-old Alejandro Hernandez of Arlington was set to be returned to Arkansas. Law enforcement had been searching for him since October 2015.

In 2015, Hernandez was charged with negligent homicide involving a vehicle, drugged driving/under the influence, careless and prohibited driving and not having a driver’s license.

Sheriff Cassell says the Texas man was involved in a motorcycle fatality accident on Oct. 25, 2014 on State Highway 16, approximately 3 miles from Witts Springs.

According to the report by Arkansas State Police Trooper Joseph Gilliland, evidence found at the scene supported Hernandez’s involvement in the crash with the Harley Davidson motorcycle he was driving and a Kawasaki motorcycle driven by 25-year-old Michael Lucas of Lonoke. Lucas died as a result of the crash.

A third motorcyclist, who was driving with Lucas at the time of the accident, provided the ASP with a video of the collision supporting the evidence found at the scene.

The Arkansas State Crime Lab toxicology report showed Hernandez had benzodiazepines in his system at the time of the accident.

Following the accident, Hernandez left Arkansas and was not located until last September, when he was taken into custody by officers with the Tarrant County, Texas Sheriff’s Department. Hernandez was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from Searcy County.

On April 30, Cassell and Reserve Deputy David Williams drove to Fort Worth, Texas, to return Hernandez to Arkansas.
