A Baxter County man is jailed in central Missouri, after he allegedly stole multiple cars across several counties Thursday. Forty-two-year-old Michael Mahoney of Lakeview is facing a multitude of charges in central and northeast Missouri for the crime spree.

Law enforcement was dispatched to a location in rural Knox County in the northeast part of Missouri, where it was reported someone had driven a car into another vehicle and a carport causing damage and fled the scene.

Sgt. Eric Brown with Troop B of the Missouri State Highway Patrol says the car Mahoney was allegedly driving when he rammed into the vehicle and carport was later found abandoned in Scotland County. Mahoney then allegedly stole two more vehicles from homes in rural Knox County and was in the process of stealing a third car from a car dealership in Rutledge, Missouri, when he was apprehended by the highway patrol.

Mahoney had allegedly stolen the original vehicle in Columbia, Missouri. Columbia Police say the car had been reported stolen Sunday, but no other details are being released.

Law enforcement is still trying to determine why the Baxter County man was in central and northeast Missouri, and what prompted the events.

Sgt. Brown says Mahoney was transferred to the Boone County jail in Columbia, where he is being held on car theft charges from the original theft.

Charges from the incidents in Knox county include three felony counts of tampering with a motor vehicle in the first degree, felony property damage, felony burglary in the first degree, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, trespassing in the second degree, driving while suspended, failure to drive on right half of the roadway and careless and imprudent driving.

Sgt. Brown says the investigation is continuing into the incidents.
