Ozark County voters elect new sheriff, 2 from Ozark County advance in state races

Voters in Ozark County have selected who will take over for retiring Sheriff Darrin Reed next year. During the primary election Tuesday, Cass Martin defeated Curtis Dobbs on the Republican ticket to win the seat. Martin had 1,563 votes or 52%, while Dobbs received 1,415 votes or 48 percent. With no opposition in the General Election in November, Martin will take over as Sheriff Jan. 1.

Ozark County Assessor Jama Berry fended off two challengers in the Republican primary to win re-election to the seat she has held since 2012. Berry received 1,710 votes for 58%, Karen Cunningham got 1,018 votes for 35% and Jennifer Cole received 202 votes for 7%. No one ran on the Democratic ticket.

Wasola resident Karla Eslinger won her Republican primary for Missouri’s 33rd Senate District seat and advances on to the General Election. Eslinger won the three-person race by just 142 votes. She received 12,701 votes, while Robert Ross had 12,559. Van Kelly was a distant third in the race, which includes Ozark, Douglas, Howell, Oregon, Wright, Texas, Webster and Ripley counties. Eslinger will face Democrat Tammy Harty in November’s General Election.

Ozark County’s Travis Smith defeated Joe Combs of Taney County in the Republican primary for Missouri’s 155th House District seat. Smith garnered 5,484 votes for 59%, while Combs received 3,758 votes for 41%. Smith will face Democrat Mike Lind of Thornfield in the General Election. The district includes all of Ozark and Douglas counties and part of Taney County.
