ROLLA, Mo. (AP) – A Doniphan man was hospitalized in stable condition after he was shot by a Rolla police officer during a foot chase, Rolla police said.

The incident on Monday began when a burglary was reported at the Three Squirrels Winery in St. James. The suspect’s vehicle was seen in Rolla and a vehicle pursuit began. The vehicle eventually crashed and the suspect fled on foot.

The suspect, 53-year-old William Gregory Sparks, pointed his gun at a Phelps County sheriff’s deputy during the case, police said in a news release. He later turned toward officers in “an aggressive position,” prompting the officer to shoot him.

Sparks was hit in the shoulder and taken to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. The investigation is continuing.
