Local plumber offers home tips for Arctic blast

An Arctic blast has arrived in the Twin Lakes Area, as temperatures this weekend are expected to reach some of the lowest numbers in recent years.According to the National Weather Service in North Little Rock, bitterly cold Arctic air is settling in over Arkansas. Temperatures will drop into the single digits across the northern zones and into the teens across southern zones Monday morning. Wind chill values will drop into the single digits nearly statewide. As the temperatures plummet, Alfred Dewey, owner of Dewey and Sons Plumbing, says there are some things to keep in mind to prevent water pipes from freezing at home.

If pipes freeze, Dewey says he doesn’t advise trying to thaw them with a blow torch, which can start a fire. A hair dryer can be used at the site of the freeze. However, he says it’s best to have pipes treated by a professional to avoid damage to your home.

If a pipe bursts, there will be no evidence until the weather warms up. If it’s noticed a pipe has ruptured, he says to have the issue addressed, as soon as possible.

During a winter freeze, there are other areas of the home to pay attention to.
