A film set in Lincoln from a director who grew up in Northwest Arkansas has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. The announcement came Monday morning, according to a report from KHOG.
“Minari” tells the story of a young Korean couple who moved with their kids to Arkansas in the 1980s.
The Academy Awards will be held on April 25.
The film garnered six total nominations. In addition to Best Picture, it was nominated for Original Screenplay and Original Score.
Lee Isaac Chung was nominated for Best Director, Steven Yeun was nominated for Actor in a Leading Role, Youn Yuh-jung was nominated for Actress in a Supporting Role.
Earlier this month, “Minari” won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture — Foreign Language.
The film, starring Yuen and directed by Chung, is a semi-autobiographical story based on Chung’s life — featuring a family of South Korean immigrants building a life on a farm in Northwest Arkansas.
Chung grew up in Lincoln, and the film, which is set in rural Washington County during the 1980s, was shot just west of the state line outside Tulsa.
Prior to winning a Golden Globe, “Minari” won 65 other awards, including the Audience Award for a dramatic film and Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Minari” earned 10 nominations at the Critics Choice Awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Acting Ensemble.
