A Sharp County deputy sheriff was shot Friday morning while transporting a male juvenile in his patrol vehicle.
According to a news release from Sharp County Sheriff Mark Counts, Deputy Marc Boyd was shot in his arm and transported by ambulance to White River Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities received a call from a motorist Friday of a possible runaway juvenile traveling on a bicycle on State Highway 175 between Wirth and Hardy.
Deputy Boyd and a Hardy police officer responded to the area, spoke to the subject and determined the juvenile was not a runaway. The deputy then loaded the juvenile’s bicycle in his vehicle, secured the subject in the back seat and stopped at a gas station to buy the juvenile some ice cream.
While transporting the juvenile to his residence, the juvenile pulled a pistol out of his backpack, shot through the cage and struck Boyd in the arm.
The juvenile is now in custody and awaiting the filing of formal charges.
