A man who threatened to harm himself by jumping from a 25-foot cedar tree in June was arrested Aug. 13 after a domestic dispute at a Mountain Home apartment complex.

Christopher M. McDaniel is jailed on a felony charge of residential burglary and misdemeanors of criminal mischief, refusal to submit to arrest and criminal trespass from the June incident and charges of third-degree domestic assault, obstructing governmental operations and refusal to submit to arrest in connection with Friday’s domestic incident.

Mountain Home police received a call at 9:45 a.m. of a verbal domestic, with an officer arriving on scene to hear a woman screaming and a man yelling. When the officer knocked on the door, a male later identified as McDaniel, unlocked the door, cracked it open, saw the officer and suddenly closed the door and locked it once more. McDaniel allegedly began to verbally assault the female again and the officer made several attempts to force the door open, but was unsuccessful.

The officer reported McDaniel had barricaded himself in the apartment, but moments later, McDaniel opened the door of the apartment and came out with his hands up. He was arrested at gunpoint and transported to the Baxter County Detention Center.

In the June incident, the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a break-in in progress at a residence on State Highway 5 South. A deputy arrived to find broken windows in a duplex and spoke with the tenant, who identified McDaniel as a suspect. Witnesses reported McDaniel fled into nearby woods.

A search of the area revealed a large wrench and large hammer, which had been used to break two windows and two doors on the property. Investigators learned McDaniel had been “kicked off the property in May” and was not allowed to be there. Authorities also found evidence McDaniel had been “squatting” on the property for some time.

Later that evening, authorities were dispatched to an area on County Road 310, where McDaniel was reportedly located. When deputies arrived, they found McDaniel near the top of a 25-foot cedar tree. McDaniel refused to climb down from the tree, “stating that he did not want to go to jail.” He then began to threaten to jump from the tree to cause self-harm.

An ambulance from Baxter Regional and EMS personnel from the Tracy Ferry Fire Department arrived on scene, with McDaniel finally climbing out of the tree after 90 minutes of negotiations. He was transported to Baxter Regional for treatment after the incident.
