Service to Baxter County’s land-based telephone lines appears to have been restored by mid-morning Wednesday. There has not been any confirmation as to what caused the outage, which pulled down telephone service across the county for several hours.

The outage also affected the county’s 911 system, which remains offline as of 10:30 Wednesday morning. Baxter County has several agreements with other 911 systems to cover for one another in the event of a service outage.

Baxter County 911 coordinator Mike Shetrompf says the county’s 911 calls are currently being rerouted to Independence County, who is fielding the calls and then relaying the information back to Baxter County emergency services.

Shetrompf says those calling 911 at the moment might experience slight delays as the calls are rerouted through the 911 systems. He says direct 911 service will hopefully be restored later today.
