Jeffery Scott Shepherd, charged with first-degree murder in the June 2019 shooting death of then 20-year-old Tyler Pickett, is now accused of stealing a pickup truck.Shepherd is in the Baxter County jail on a no-bond hold. He was declared a fugitive last week after breaking off contact with the Mountain Home office of Arkansas Community Correction.

The 39-year-old Shepherd was on parole in a case unrelated to the Pickett murder or the new truck theft charge.

Shepherd was booked into the Baxter County jail at just before 9 p.m. on Thursday. He was charged with violating parole and theft of property. His parole is now listed as revoked.

According to the jail log, Shepherd’s fugitive status ended when he was apprehended by a special response team (SRT) from Arkansas Community Corrections at a residence in Gassville.

The SRT is employed to deal with “high risk” absconders.

His newest charge stems from the alleged theft of a pickup truck from a residence along State Highway 201 North on Oct. 27.

The victim told Baxter County sheriff’s deputies Shepherd had worked for him in the past and had been allowed to drive the truck.

He said he contacted Shepherd recently and told him he needed the truck back. On Oct. 27, Shepherd brought the truck to the victim’s home and put the keys on a table inside the residence.

The two men talked for a few minutes until the victim went to the bathroom. Shepherd said he needed to get something from the truck.

When the victim came out of the bathroom, the keys to the truck, the truck and Shepherd were all gone.

The victim said he waited until the next day to report the vehicle stolen.

On Nov. 1, the victim called the sheriff’s office and said when he got up that morning, the missing truck, valued at $6,000, was parked in his driveway.

The truck had sustained damage, including missing the front bumper and having scratches and dings on the body. The rear fender on the passenger side was also damaged.
