Nearly two months after Mountain Home city officials went to Jacksonville and asked for a grant from the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, their application has been approved. Mayor Hillrey Adams has received a letter from Gov. Asa Hutchinson announcing the department’s Outdoor Recreation Grants Advisory Committee recommended the city receive $225,000 to assist in the development of an inclusive playground, seating for an existing amphitheater, barrier-free restrooms, horseshoe pits and associated barrier-free parking and access at Hickory Park.

Mayor Adams says while the city did ask for $250,000, he is excited and grateful for the amount coming in.

Mayor Adams adds the grant was awarded based on a 2022 application for Matching Grant Funds.

While the grant will assist with a portion of the cost, Adams says the remainder of the funds are courtesy of a sales tax measure approved earlier this year by Mountain Home voters.

The mayor says he anticipates construction to get underway in the first week of January, and he’s looking for the project to be completed in May.
