A teen Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadet from Searcy County has earned her solo wings.

Sixteen-year-old Cadet Major Madeline Thompson of Marshall has been accepted into the CAP’s National Flight
Academy in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Cadets apply for this competitive program through CAP.

Thompson was awarded a CAP solo scholarship and a scholarship through the local Armstrong Endowment to cover all her costs of attendance.

She started her training in a CAP Cessna 172 in Wisconsin and due to weather conditions, had to complete her program
locally.

Cadet Thompson ended up soloing in an Aero Commander Lark in Midway with a local group called Leading Edge.

The Twin Lakes Squadron of the CAP meets Tuesday evenings from 6-8 at the Baxter County Airport in Midway.

Students ages 12-18 are eligible to join.

About CAP

CAP is the longtime auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a valued member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 single-engine aircraft and more than 2,100 small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). It performs about 90% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 82 lives annually. CAP’s 56,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Operating as a nonprofit organization, CAP also plays a leading role in STEM/aerospace education, and its members serve as mentors to more than 23,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
